CLOSE READING
"It's a careful and purposeful rereading of a text. It's an encounter with the text where students really focus on what the author had to say, what the author's purpose was, what the words mean, and what the structure of the text tells us."
Dr. Douglas Fischer

What is close reading? What we have focused on in class:
1. Read the whole text without stopping to get the "flow."
2. Ask yourself: What is the main idea or what is the text mostly about?"
3. Reread the text again, stopping at each paragraph to circle, underline, or highlight important, familiar, or repeated words/phrases.
4. Write the "gist" for each paragraph in the margin.
5. Reread the text again to check for the text's main idea. Write it down above or beneath the text.
Important: Your "gists" for each paragraph should support the main idea of the text.
